Alcohol suspected in highway crash

Alcohol was suspected in connection with a crash that left two drivers injured early Friday morning on Highway 63 near the Stadium exit, stated a news release from the Columbia Police Department.

Martha Knuppel, 38, of Cairo, was driving southbound on Highway 63 approaching Stadium Boulevard when her car was hit from behind.

The impact of the collision forced the car, driven by Konrad A. Monie, 28, of Columbia, off the road where it overturned, stated the news release.

Knuppel’s car left the road, striking a fence. He was taken to the hospital by an ambulance, with moderate injuries.

Monie received minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by police. He was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened, the news release stated.

Police think Monie was intoxicated at the time of the accident.

The investigation is ongoing.
