Columbia police officers reconstruct an accident that left one dead after a police cruiser ran over the victim Saturday night. The on-duty officer driving the cruiser has been placed on paid administrative leave pending two investigations.
A Columbia police cruiser hit a pedestrian just after 11 p.m. Saturday on Clark Lane near Lambeth Drive.
The pedestrian, 24-year-old Columbia resident Jeremy Setzer, was lying in the middle of the road at the time of the crash, according to a news release from the department.
Officer Alan Mitchell, who has been part of the department for six years, was driving the police vehicle that hit Setzer, according to a news release from the department.
Setzer was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Mitchell has been placed on administrative leave while the Professional Standards Unit conducts an internal investigation.
After the accident police blocked about a half-mile of Clark Lane and reconstructed the accident as part of their investigation.
The department is still investigating the accident, and is asking the members of the public to report any information they have about it.
