Electrical malfunction causes north Columbia fire
Firefighters think an electrical malfunction caused a fire at 3208 Northland Drive on Sunday.
Firefighters were called at 10:58 p.m. to the residence. The occupants, Ashley and Carla Martin, were awake when the fire began and smelled and saw smoke.
They found a small fire near their clothes dryer and extinguished it with a cup of water. They called the fire department after they discovered more smoke, the news release stated.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within ten minutes.
The home is owned by Kevin Witherspoon. The fire caused $4,000 worth of property damage and no one was injured in the fire.
Investigators determined the fire was caused by a faulty electrical configuration in the wall behind the dryer, the news release stated.
The home had working smoke alarms, which were functioning correctly when firefighters arrived.
