A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies will soon begin the accreditation process for the MU Police Department. An MUPD news release stated the team will arrive on August 1 and will review procedures and practices of MUPD to determine if they follow CALEA's standards for a law enforcement agency.

In the news release, MUPD Capt. Brian Weimer said receiving this accreditation was a "highly prized" recognition of excellence.

Weimer said MUPD has been accredited for a number of years, but he said the process to be accredited again is more than just a formality. He said the process involves both sending off hundreds of documents for off-site review and an on the scene assessment by a team from the commission. The news release stated CALEA has over 350 standards that MUPD must comply with to be accredited.

The news release stated as part of the assessment process there will be a public information meeting held on Monday, August 3 at 12:15 p.m. in room 110 on the south side of Memorial Union. This meeting will offer MUPD employees and members of the community to ask questions and comment on the process.

The news release stated if someone is unable to be present at the meeting, but would still like to provide comments, the CALEA team will take calls from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 2. The phone number to call in order to comment is (573) 882-5926.

Comments at the meeting and phone calls are limited to 10 minutes and must deal with MUPD's ability to comply with CALEA standards.

People wanting to send written comments can do so by mailing the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies at 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100 in Fairfax, Virgina.

Weimer said the assessors will share their recommendation for the commission with MUPD when they leave on August 4, but no official decision will be made until CALEA's November meeting.
