Fire in duplex of MU students
Boone County Fire Protection District and the Columbia Fire Department responded to 5119 Alpine Ridge Drive around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to a fire in a duplex. The fire is believed to have begun in the kitchen while the residents were heating cooking oil.
Five people were in the home at the time of the fire, CFD Battalion Chief Gary Warren Jr. said. Residents and MU sophomores Haley Nobis, Allyson Goodiel and Kara Ensor had two male guests over. Everyone made it out safely and there were no reported injuries, Warren said.
According to a CFD news release, the male guests attempted to extinguish the flames with a towel and then baking soda, while Nobis, Goodiel and Ensor attempted to locate a fire extinguisher. When the flames became too intense for the residents, they evacuated while Nobis called 911, the release stated.
The home had working smoke detectors that were sounding, Warren said.
A damage estimate is pending upon conclusion of an investigation
