Fatal crash on Highway 63

Columbia Police officers responded to a report of a crash early Monday morning, a CPD news release stated.

The crash happened on Highway 63 South near Grindstone Parkway. The vehicle was reported to be upside-down and off the roadway.

According to the news release, the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt lost control, traveled off the west side of the roadway, struck a highway sign, traveled through a ditch and struck some trees. The driver, 24-year-old Deborah L. Sweet of Columbia was pronounced dead at the scene. Sweet was not wearing a seat belt.

CPD spokeswoman Jessie Haden said that CPD has no reason to suspect drugs or alcohol were related to the crash.

"She was not wearing a seat belt," Haden said. "If you’re not wearing a seat belt then it does increase your chance of injury or death."
