East Campus sirens result of malfunction
The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management said emergency sirens that sounded Saturday morning near East Campus were the result of a false alarm.
In a news release, OEM Director Zim Schwartze said a Columbia Fire Department crew was near the siren when it sounded around 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Schwartze said the crew checked the siren and found that it was damaged. Schwartze did not say what the damage was, but said OEM had contacted technicians to repair the siren Monday.
“We’re not sure what caused the damage to the siren, but we are taking steps to have it repaired,” Schwartze said.
Schwartze said East Campus will be served by another nearby siren and advised that neighborhood residents tune in to local media in the event of severe weather.
