CPD seeks tips in weekend crimes, shots fired
The Columbia Police Department is investigating two crimes that occurred near campus Friday and is seeking more information in a string of incidents involved gunshots being fired, according to a Sunday press release from the department.
According to the release, a 22-year-old woman reported her burgundy 1995 Buick Le Sabre stolen from the parking lot of The Reserve apartment complex at 11 a.m.
Also on Friday, a 26-year-old male pizza delivery driver claimed he was attacked on the 1300 block of Rosemary Street by three men, who reportedly stole one of the two pizzas he was attempting to deliver to a house on the street.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Department is also investigating a shooting at the Boone County Fairgrounds that occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday. In the press release Sunday, CPD said it has received information that the shooting was connected to two earlier shootings, one Tuesday and one earlier Friday.
In the Tuesday shooting, occupants of a white SUV and a four-door burgundy vehicle reportedly exchanged gunfire in the 2300 block of White Gate Drive around 1 a.m.
In the Friday incident, a home in the 200 block of Hickman Avenue was hit by three bullets in an alleged drive-by shooting. Eleven people were in the home at the time, but there were no injuries.
The press release stated that the shooting at the fairgrounds was a "continuation" on those incidents. CPD spokeswoman Jesse Haden said the department "know[s] who the responsible individuals are" but is seeking tips and information to establish probable cause for warrants and arrests.
“We know, because of the information we continue to receive, who the responsible individuals are," Haden said. "However, we must abide by the legal process. We encourage those people to utilize Crime Stoppers so they can remain anonymous. I hope a witness can live with him or herself, if someone gets hurt down the road, and that person could have prevented it with a simple call to Crime Stoppers.”
