Fire reported at Columbia Mall

Early Sunday morning Columbia fire fighters responded to a fire alarm at the Columbia Mall.

Fire crews found light smoke in the mall and found water coming from the door to TRYPS Children's Theater, a Columbia Fire Department news release stated. Fire fighters then forced their way into the theater where there was a considerable amount of smoke and the sprinkler system functioning.

Crews located the fire in a storage area behind the theater stage, the release stated. The automatic sprinkler system had controlled the fire and crews were able to complete extinguishment with a fire extinguisher.

According to the news release, fire crews used large fans to remove the smoke from the affected areas of the mall. They also used water vacuums and the mall floor machines to remove the water from the sprinkler system.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Damages have been estimated at $2,500 and there were no injuries associated with the fire.
