UPDATE: Car hits cyclist at College and University Avenues

A Columbia Fire Department truck arrives at the scene of a collision between a car and a cyclist at the corner of University and College avenues Friday afternoon. The collision took place around 1 p.m.

A car hit a bicyclist at the intersection of College and University Avenues at around 1 p.m. Friday.

At about 1:30 p.m. Friday, MU Police Department officers were taking measurements and examining the car and the bike involved in the accident.

Traffic moving in both directions on college was backed up while emergency vehicles were on the scene. At about 1:40 p.m. traffic was still moving slowly because the car involved in the accident was still there.

Freshman Alex Bjerke said he saw the collision first-hand.

“This car smoked her and she flew," Bjerke said. “She hit the ground and was screaming ‘my head, my head something’s broken.’”

An MUPD vehicle was stopped at the light at University and College at the time of the collision. An ambulance responded about 15 minutes later.

The car involved was a gold Nissan Altima driving north on College. Police took measurements and examined a bike that ended up north of University Avenue on College. Traffic on north and south on College was backed up for a while while there were emergency vehicles.
