Johnny Wright found guilty of second-degree murder

A jury found defendant Johnny Wright guilty of second-degree murder Friday evening. Wright is convicted of killing former MU student Rebecca Doisy in 1976. Her body was never found.

His bond was raised from $100,000 to $1,000,000. He was taken into custody Friday evening after prosecuting attorney Richard Hicks argued he was a flight risk because before the warrant was issued for his arrest in 1985, he left Columbia before changing his name and social security number.

The judge read the jury’s unanimous verdict at 7:01 p.m. after more than six hours of deliberation. The verdict was met with tears from Doisy’s family, including her sister, Kathy Doisy, who testified on Wednesday and Thursday. She repeatedly thanked former Columbia Police Department detective Chris Egbert for his involvement in the case.

The final sentencing of Johnny Wright is set for March 14 at 1:30 p.m.
