Chemical reaction in Chemistry Building sends one to hospital

A graduate research assistant was sent to University Hospital before noon Wednesday after injuries resulting from a chemical reaction in the Chemistry Building.

MU spokesman Christian Basi said details on the incident are vague at this point, but he emphasized the incident was a reaction rather than an explosion.

Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief James Weaver said there was no fire.

"There's not much to tell besides that it was a medical emergency," he said. "We treated the individual and then transported the individual to the hospital."

The graduate student injured by the reaction suffered from injuries to the hand. Officials from MU Environmental Health and Safety are currently investigating the incident.

"We're trying to determine what happened, why it happened and if it can be prevented in the future," Basi said. "Could this have been something that could have been prevented?"
