Police arrest man for impersonating police officer
Police identified and arrested a suspect at a traffic stop Wednesday night for impersonating a police officer.
Zachary L. Rugen, 20, was arrested after officers asked him for a consent search of his vehicle and found items related to the crimes. He voluntarily came to the police department for further investigation and was arrested for assault, felonious restraint and three counts of false impersonation of a law enforcement officer.
Over the weekend, police received four reports of a man impersonating a police officer. Each of the four victims reported a vehicle flashed its headlights from low to high beam in the same manner as a police car.
One victim reported a male approached the car and asked for license and insurance information in the same way a police officer does. The victim noticed a gun holstered on the man's belt.
Another victim said the suspect became angry when the victim wouldn't pull over, and the suspect cut the victim off. The victim said the suspect ran up to him and ordered him from the car, claiming to be a DEA agent.
None of the victims were harmed. The victims were able to provide a description of the vehicle to the police, which enabled them to identify Rugen's black Impala with no plates near Broadfield Drive and Broadway Wednesday night. Later that evening, Rugen made incriminating remarks linking him to the crime.
