Missouri Wrestling to take on Cal Poly

At noon, No. 8 Missouri will face Cal Poly in their first dual of the day. Their second dual will be at 7 against Purdue. All-Americans Mark Ellis and Max Askren will not start for Missouri against Cal Poly.

Starting in place of Askren will be redshirt Freshman Todd Porter. Sophomore Dominique Bradley will start in place of Ellis. Troy Dolan, who was Missouri's opening day starter at the 125-pound weight class is also out of the starting line-up. Freshman Brad Wisdom will start for Dolan.

Cal Poly's line-up features three ranked wrestlers. No. 14 Boris Novachkov and No. 14 Filip Novachkov will wrestle in the 133-pound weight class and 141-pound weight class respectively. No. 2 Chase Pami will wrestle in the 157-pound weight class. Redshirt Freshman Nick Gregoris will be faced with the difficult task of wrestling Pami.

No. 12 Brent Haynes will make his first start for Missouri since making his debut in the rankings after an exciting victory last week. He will wrestle Ryan Smith in 197-pound weight class.

Freshman Wisdom Wins

Making his first start in place of Troy Dolan, Freshman Brad Wisdom won his first match in the 125-pound weight class 8-5. Wisdom scored the first five points of the match with an early takedown followed by a three point near fall. Wisdom led Micah Ferguson of Cal Poly 7-2 at the close of the first period and held on to win by three. Missouri now leads the dual 3-0.

McCormick loses 5-2

Missouri wrestler Nathan McCormick lost to No. 14 Boris Novachkov of Cal Poly in the 133-pound weight-class. McCormick escaped the first period with a 2-2 tie but failed to score the rest of the match and Novachkov won 5-2. The victory for Novachkov tied the dual at 3-3.

Schavrien loses by fall

In the 149-pound weight-class, No. 18 Todd Schavrien of Missouri lost by fall to No. 14 Filip Novachkov of Cal Poly by fall. Novachkov was able to pin Schavrien before the first period of the match ended. Cal Poly now holds a 9-3 lead over Missouri in the dual.

Wiest loses in final minute

Sophomore Brandon Weist of Missouri lost a close match to David Christian of Cal Poly in the 149-pound weight-class. Weist led 4-2 after one period and also led 7-5 during the third period. A late escape by Christian followed by a takedown gave Christian the lead. Christian kept Weist on the mat for the rest of the mat, and won 9-7 with riding time. Cal Poly now leads Missouri 12-3 in the dual.

Pami beats Gregoris 13-3

No. 2 Chase Pami of Cal Poly beat Nick Gregoris of Missouri 13-3. Gregoris trailed 2-0 after one period and 5-1 after two periods before Pami pulled away in the third. Pami extended Cal Poly's lead in the dual to 16-3.

Marable beats Vasquez

In the 165-pound weight class, Missouri Sophomore No. 7 Nicholas Marable beat Cal Poly redshirt Freshman Steven Vasquez 5-2. Marable had a takedown in the first period and led the whole match. Marable was the first Tiger to win in the dual since Brad Wisdom at the 125-pound weight class. The victory cuts the Cal Poly lead to 16-6.

Henderson wins 7-4

No. 16 Dorian Henderson beat Ryan DesRoches 7-4 in the 174-pound weight-class. Henderson trailed 2-1 after the first period. Henderson earned the victory with takedowns in the second and third periods. He also ran up over two minutes of riding time in the victory. The win further cut Cal Poly's lead in the dual to 16-9.

Porter loses by Fall

Without No. 2 Max Askren in the lineup, redshirt Freshman Todd Porter started for Missouri in the 184-pound weight class. Porter lost by fall in the first period against Junior Tyler Holt of Cal Poly. Cal Poly extended their lead over Missouri in the dual to 22-9 with just two matches remaining.

No. 12 Haynes holds on to win

Wrestling in a dual for the first time since entering into the rankings, No. 12 Brent Haynes became Missouri's fourth wrestler to win in the dual. Haynes, wrestling in the 197-pound weight-class held a 7-0 lead in the second period, but Ryan Smith of Cal Poly would not quit.

Battling obvious fatigue, Haynes avoided a takedown in the final thirty seconds to win 9-7. The victory cut Cal Poly's lead to 22-12.

Bradley wins, Missouri loses

Missouri Sophomore Heavyweight Dominique Bradley won the final match of the dual 4-1 over Jim Powers. The only takedown of the match came in the first period. Bradley also earned an extra point off of riding time.

Bradley was the fifth Missouri wrestler to win in the dual, but two pins by Cal Poly made the difference in the match. Cal Poly won by a final score of 22-15.
