POLICE REVIEW BOARD: Members speak on motion to accept CPD chief's report

Board member and MU professor Steve Weinberg said he is troubled that the first complaint was filed by people other than those who were in the house, who he says do not have first-hand knowledge of the information. He thinks the board has enough information to make its decision tonight.

"I think we can go ahead and make our recommendations," he said.

He also offered an amendment to Smith's motion that on future raids CPD have an officer whose is responsible for knowing if there are children or animals in a house that is being raided.

Weinberg made an amendment that "In any entry in the future into a private property-where it is dynamic or not-someone specific be charged with knowing everything that is humanly possible to know about minors or animals in the house."

Wilson said she supports that amendment but still opposes making a decision tonight, saying the board seems to both supporting and condemning the raid.

"I don't think it was OK at the time with the policies that were in effect," Wilson said, receiving applause from the audience.

Board member Carroll Highbarger said he thinks Columbia Police Chief Ken Burton has done a good job making changes in the department related to the incident.

"I think the chief got out in front of us and did that," he said.

Also today, Dan Viets and 41 Columbia residents have filed another complaint related to the incident. Rosenthal and Viets are both in the audience for tonight's meeting.
