Getting to Know: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin
Maybe it's that sweet, subdued pop likability or the fact that the name references the first president of Russia (I am a Russian major, after all), but Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin has been a favorite ever since a friend put "Oregon Girl" on a mix CD for me last year.
Not that there's much to technically "ease into" with SSLYBY—the music is about as accessible as a revolving door—but let's start with the aforementioned fan favorite off 2006's debut, Broom.
Not only is this prime, vintage video footage supposedly shot for a school project, but drummer Philip Dickey is totally pulling a Ringo a la this video. While that's on purpose, some have said that the band tries too hard to intentionally sound like Weezer. The influence is spot-on, but you be the judge.
Taking another page out of Broom, next up is jivey little number "Anne Elephant."
Now for something a little more recent. "Think I Wanna Die," the first single off last year's Pershing, is reminiscent of the Shins.
