Nixon watch party begins
As the watch party for gubernatorial candidate Jay Nixon gets ready to commence, members of his campaign and the Democratic Party are doing last-minute promotions for Nixon. Democrats think Nixon has a handle on the state and Missourians are ready for a leader like Nixon.
"The huge numbers of new voters, both young people and people of color, is a good sign that people want something different," said state Sen. Joan Bray, who has been working with the Nixon campaign.
Campaign activists said they have felt the support of Missourians throughout the election, confirming their beliefs Missourians want Nixon as governor.
"He has been successful because he understands what people care about," Bray said.
In addition to support on election night, campaign organizers have seen Missourians working during the election.
"We have thousands of folks that are grassroots supporters," Nixon spokesman Oren Shur said. "It's clear the people of Missouri are energized to take the state in a new direction."
Campaign workers said they are ready for the night to start as well.
"Turnout was as expected or better and everything here was going to plan," campaign volunteer Bruce Bain said.
Shur said he expects a few hundred people to attend the watch party.
