Obama pulls ahead with latest state projections

As the polls close in a number of states, including much of the Northeast and a fair amount of the Midwest, more states have been called, with the latest totals giving Barack Obama an electoral lead.

Three additional states have been called for John McCain according to The Associated Press, CNN and RealClearPolitics.com:

  • Oklahoma, 0 percent of precincts reporting,  favoring McCain with 52 percent of the vote (CNN)

  • South Carolina, 3 percent of precincts reporting, favoring McCain with 51 percent of the vote (AP)

  • Tennessee, 2 percent of precincts reporting, favoring McCain with 63 percent of the vote (AP)

From these, McCain will recieve an additional 26 electoral votes: eight from South Carolina, 11 from Tennessee and seven from Oklahoma.

Obama has won the following states, including his home state of Illinois, according to The Associated Press or CNN and sometimes both

  • Connecticut, 2 percent of precincts reporting, favoring Obama with 81 percent of the vote (CNN)

  • Delaware, 0 percent of precincts reporting, with no available vote tallies (AP; CNN)

  • District of Columbia, 0 percent of precincts reporting, with no available vote tallies (AP; CNN)

  • Illinois, 0 percent of precincts reporting, favoring Obama with 58 percent of the vote (AP)

  • Maine, 0 percent of precincts reporting, favoring Obama with 67 percent of the vote (AP; CNN)

  • Maryland, 0 percent of precincts reporting, with no available vote tallies (AP; CNN)

  • Massachusetts, 0 percent of precincts reporting, favoring Obama with 53 percent of the vote (AP)

  • New Hampshire, 7 percent of precincts reporting, favoring Obama with 60 percent of the vote (CNN)

  • New Jersey, 0 percent of precincts reporting, favoring Obama with 55 percent of the vote (CNN)

From these, Obama has garnered an additional 78 electoral votes: seven from Connecticut, three from Delaware, three from the District of Columbia, 21 from Illinois, four from Maine, 10 from Maryland, 12 from Massachusetts, four from New Hampshire and 15 from New Jersey.
