Voters approve Proposition A
Missouri voters approved Proposition A, the Schools First Elementary and Secondary Education Initiative 55 percent to 45 percent. The measure increases taxes on casinos to 21 percent and provides the 1 percent of increased revenue to Missouri public schools. It also removes the $500 loss limit, creates a self-ban list for gambling addicts and bans the construction of new casinos other than those currently being built. Proponents of the bill say it will create a secure fund for education and provide over $100 million per year to elementary and secondary schools. Opponents say the bill weakens law enforcement by removing the self-ban list and could cause over $2 billion in losses because of the removal of the loss limit. They also argue that the measure would fail to provide funding to 81 percent of Missouri schools.

Proposition A is clearly more about ensuring obscene profits for Missouri's gambling industry than it is about securing funds for education. This whole proposition is loaded with goodies for the casinos. There are better ways to help Missouri's elementary and secondary students.

Shelly, look into the proposition a little bit further. The Maneater was right in not endorsing Prop A because it's about casinos, not students. Just because something "good" is written into a piece of legislation is not a reason to vote for it given the other components. Sometimes you have to shoot down something good in order to oppose something bad.

So much for the Maneater's editorial clout. Proposition A will raise millions in new funding for college financial aid. It is unbelievable that the MU student paper would be against this, especially since students will benefit. Once again the Maneater is out of step.
