Nixon unveils economic proposal
Gov.-elect Jay Nixon revealed a broad-based economic plan today that aims to expand employment in the state and support business growth through tax credits.
The plan, called Show Me JOBS, has gained the support of state legislative leaders from both parties. The plan would provide tax credits to small businesses, as well as large-scale business that seek to expand their operations in the state.
In a joint release from Nixon and legislative leaders, Nixon said the plan would create jobs and foster growth among small businesses.
"During these difficult economic times, we must come together, across party lines, to get Missourians working,” Nixon said in the release. “Missouri is home to the most innovative, most productive workers in the world, but as the national economic crisis worsens, too many of our friends and neighbors are unemployed."
Senate Majority Leader Charlie Shields, R-St. Joseph, said the parties share a "common goal" of creating jobs in the state.
“In the Senate, we are committed to working early on with the Governor-elect to pursue responsible, job-creating legislation,” Shields said.
Senate Minority Leader Victor Callahan, D-Harrisonville, also voiced his support for the measure.
"The solution to this economic crisis won’t come from a Washington policy or a Wall Street bailout,” said Sen. Callahan said. “It will come from small-business owners right here in our state. That’s why Republican and Democratic leaders are coming together to help Missouri businesses hire new workers, get them trained and get them on the job."
