Nixon to outline his economic priorities Sept. 9
Attorney General Jay Nixon will outline his economic priorities in his race for governor at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, in Springfield, Mo. He will present his plans to the Missouri Municipal League Annual Conference and Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce.
Nixon will “highlight his plans to develop Missouri’s workforce, attract jobs to the state and support small businesses,” stated a news release from Nixon’s campaign.
Nixon and his Republican opponent U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof of Columbia will be on campus Thursday to debate their policies as part of the journalism school’s Centennial Celebration. Because the debate will be held on Sept. 11, Nixon’s campaign has asked Hulshof’s campaign to refrain from direct attacks in memory of those who lost their lives on 9/11.
Hulshof's campaign could not be reached for comment. His economic plan is here on his Web sit
This request follows the statement issued by Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain on their resolution to put aside politics on Sept. 11 for the same reasons. The Nixon campaign has also instructed television stations around the sate not to air their TV advertisements on Sept. 11.
UPDATE:
Here is a statement from John Hancock of the Hulshof campaign:
"Part of celebrating the freedoms we enjoy as Americans is the opportunity for free and fair debate without the fear of reprisals. Those Americans who gave their lives on September 11 – and indeed all Americans who are currently defending those very freedoms – did so knowing that they are part of the most free and open nation that this world has ever known.
"Toward that end, we believe that the September 11 debate should honor those American values of openness and freedom. In fact, we would be pleased to have even more opportunities for Attorney General Nixon and Congressman Hulshof to share their competing visions of Missouri's future. We strongly recommend accepting the debates on October 20th and 28th, which would be broadcast throughout Missouri in prime time and would provide the largest audience possible for Missourians to see our two candidates face-to-face.
"We look forward to a respectful and productive exchange on 9-11 before the Missouri Press Association. We are ever mindful that the great blessing of America on this world is built upon a free and open exchange of ideas."
