Newly elected state Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, has been assigned to several committees by Senate President Pro Tem Charlie Shields, R-St. Joseph.

Schaefer will serve as vice chair of the Committee for Commerce, Consumer Protection, Energy and the Environment. The work should be right up Schaefer's alley -- he practiced environmental law with Lathrop & Gage, a national law firm based in Missouri. Speaking of law, Schaefer will also serve on the Committee for Judicial and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence.

Other committees on which Schaefer will serve are Appropriations, Education, and Government Accountability and Fiscal Oversight.

“Sen. Schaefer’s wealth of knowledge and experience in the private sector, especially on energy issues, makes him the best choice to serve as vice-chairman,” Shields stated in a release. “His energy and enthusiasm will help shape legislation to ensure Missourians have cleaner, more affordable energy.”

Also today, State Rep. Mary Still, D-Columbia, was appointed Deputy Floor Whip by House Democratic Minority Whip Jeff Roorda, D-Barnhart.

The whip is responsible for coordinating communication between party members, rallying the party behind shared positions and keeping track of votes

"I am honored to be entrusted by my colleagues with this important position," Still stated in a release. "As a deputy whip, I will fight for the right priorities of broadening our economy, improving education, and expanding health care."
