Richard denounces student curator
House Speaker Ron Richard, R-Joplin, spoke about the student curator bill during the Young Republicans State Meeting at Lincoln Days.
Several bills have been proposed to allow a UM system student to hold a voting position on the board, which is a position that Richard said he does not support.
"I have been under a lot of pressure for a student curator at the University of Missouri, wondering what I'm gonna do," Richard said. "I'm not gonna let it happen. I don't think someone 22 years old has the ability and the business acumen to a business, the University of Missouri, of a billion-dollar business. I just don't think that is a proper thing to do."
When asked to elaborate on his position, Richard said: "You don't have the expertise to be on a billion dollar board of directors to make that decisions."
Richard said that students should have representation, but not a vote on the Board of Curators. He said his own experiences when he was a member of student government in college showed him that students were not qualified to have a vote on a board of curators since he said voted with "my heart and not my mind" while he was held his seat.
