Nixon set to give State of State address on Jan. 20
Gov. Jay Nixon’s State of the State address has been set for 7 p.m. Jan. 20 during a joint session of the Missouri General Assembly. According to a news release from the governor’s office, he will discuss his economic and legislative priorities for the upcoming year.
The address will be live streamed through the state’s Web site (www.MO.gov.)[www.MO.gov]
Last year, Nixon’s first State of the State speech, given on Jan. 27, focused on several things, including his plans to place 62,000 people on state health care coverage and to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. He also reiterated his support of last year’s tuition freeze plan, which at the time had been announced only a week ago. But the main theme of Nixon’s address was employment, which he spent more time discussing than any other issue.
Although the tuition freeze announced last year remained in effect, several of his health care proposals did not come to fruition. House Republicans defeated the expansion to the SCHIP program during the budget process in late February and a plan Nixon announced in March to increase health care coverage to 35,000 families was voted down in the House in early May.
