Nixon seeks to eliminate Access Missouri scholarships for private school students
Gov. Jay Nixon proposed ending Access Missouri and other state-funded scholarships for private school students in an address earlier today in Springfield.
"Missouri has wonderful colleges and universities, both public and private," Nixon said in a copy of his comments obtained by The Maneater. "But in times like these, we simply can’t continue to subsidize the choice to attend a private school."
Access Missouri is a state-funded, need-based scholarship program for both public and private school students in Missouri. According to previous Maneater reports, the program provides private-school students between $2,000 and $4,600 and public-school students between $1,000 and $2,150.
Spokesman Scott Holste confirmed the governor intends to do away with Access Missouri scholarships for private school students.
This plan was one of several proposals outlined by the governor aimed at cutting $500 million from the state budget. Stay with The Maneater for more coverage of Nixon's proposals.
