Coordinating Board of Higher Education has new member
The state's nine-member Coordinating Board of Higher Education now has a new member. Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Jefferson City citizen Gary Sharpe to replace Duane Schreimann whose term expired in 2008.
The board oversees the state Department of Higher Education and has a member from each of Missouri's congressional districts.
Sharpe, 68, was the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals executive director for 12 years and Missouri Association of School Administrators and the Missouri Council of School Administrators executive director for 19 years.
“I have always felt strongly about the importance of education to Missourians,” Sharpe said in a news release. “I have spent most of my career working to improve schools and to make them a better place for students to learn."
An MU graduate, Sharpe represented Hannibal in the state legislature for four terms. From 1981 to 1984 he chaired the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee in the House.
“He brings educational and political expertise to the board,” Higher Education Commission Robert Stein said in the release. “We welcome his perspective as a practitioner with a broad, statewide understanding of education issues.”
