Gov. Jay Nixon announced Friday the State Capitol’s dome would be dimmed for one hour March 27 in observation of Earth Hour.

“When it comes to conserving energy and saving money, big changes start with small steps like turning off the lights,” Gov. Nixon said in a news release.

Sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour is an event, which millions of people turn off their lights for one hour to promote energy conservation. Missouri is one of 19 states participating in the event. Other Missouri landmarks such as Busch Stadium, Gateway Arch and the St. Louis city hall will participate in the event.

“Last year, I ordered government departments to reduce their energy consumption by 2 percent a year for 10 years,” Gov. Nixon said. “In the first year alone, we’ve cut our energy bill by more than 6 percent. During Earth Hour 2010, we’ll turn off the lights on our Capitol dome for one hour as a clear reminder of the simple steps we can all take to make a real difference.”
