Senate changes direction, assures tuition freeze

The full Senate chose to change the ruling of the Senate Appropriations Committee and restore almost $15 million worth of higher education funding in part of the budget it approved today. This keeps Nixon's tuition freeze deal in place.

Under the tuition freeze agreement Nixon made late last year with public university presidents, tuition would remain the same for in-state undergraduate students if higher education funding wasn't cut more than $50 million, $42 million for four-year universities and $8 million for two-year colleges.

Last Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee cut this funding by additional $15 million. That would've broken the tuition freeze agreement, but Wednesday the full Senate voted to support it.

The UM system Board of Curators are set to mark tuition rates for the coming year on Thursday. According to a previous Maneater report, Board of Curators Vice Chairman Warren Erdman said its possible not all the rates would be brought up at tomorrow's meeting.

My name is Candice Britton. My friends call me,"Britt." I'm running for the office of the U.S. Congress (District 1). I respectfully ask you for your vote on August 3, 2010 in the Primary. I’m running for public office because I feel that our great country is headed in a bad direction. Problems that urgently need solutions include the following: A. Government spending is out of control. B. America now has a huge Debt and Deficit, for which both parties are responsible. C. Senators and Representatives have forgotten that their employers are the citizens of the U.S.A. and that they should be working for us, "we the people". D. The deliberate feud between Democrats and Republicans keeps this great Country and her people divided. It gives them cover to do as they please without consequence, such as, enacting legislation the majority of the people are against. I’m asking you to send me, Candice Britton to Washington D.C. I believe that we must set an example for our children and show them that equal opportunity is an American value. If you want the chance to serve the citizens of this great country, you don't have to be a millionaire, a lawyer, a doctor or an Ivy League graduate to run for public office. My opponent's father held the District 1 seat for years. When he stepped down, his son seemed to feel that the seat was his “birthright". Holding public office is a privilege, not an inheritance. Lets say, “NO!” to career politicians! I’m running to state that, “No, you didn't inherit that seat! We the people own it!” Lets show the children of this great State and Country what our Constitution stands for…I need your help to put the Electorate process back into the hands of the people. Thank you, Candice “Britt” Britton
