Blue Note to screen "1984" in opposition to Proposition 1
Tonight in downtown Columbia, The Blue Note will screen the movie "1984" in opposition to downtown cameras. The event is sponsored by Keep Columbia Free, a group opposed to Keep Columbia Safe, which got the issue on the April 6 ballot.
According to previous Maneater reports, if Proposition 1 is approved by voters, Columbia Police Department Chief Ken Burton will be able to place cameras downtown. These cameras would view sidewalks and other areas in the downtown. Supports of the cameras feel they would reduce crime.
Several groups have come out for and against the cameras, but another group recently announced they don't support the cameras. Democracy for Missouri said a "no" vote on the cameras is socially progressive and fiscally responsible.
"Democracy for Missouri opposes Proposition 1 because downtown surveillance cameras are not an effective use of limited resources and taxpayer dollars in difficult economic times," the release stated. "Empirical studies have demonstrated that police cameras on public streets do not prevent crime."
Doors for the event open at 5:00 p.m. and the movie will start an hour later. Several mayoral and council candidates will attend the showing.
