The Coordinating Board of Higher Education issued a statement Thursday in support of combining the state's two education departments into one entity.

The Missouri Senate passed a bill to combine the two departments by a unanimous vote early Thursday morning. If passed by the House, the change will still require voter approval, since it would be a constitutional amendment.

The full statement is below.

“The Coordinating Board for Higher Education strongly supports efforts to create a more effective education system for Missourians," the statement reads. "The passage by the Missouri Senate of SJR 45 is an important first step toward achieving this goal. The CBHE is committed to engaging with all interested parties in developing the final structure of a single board and defining statutory details to ensure the needs of all postsecondary students are addressed.”

The bill could go to the House as early as next week, the release states.
