Women's basketball victory full of milestones

The Missouri women’s basketball team picked up its third road win of the season on Tuesday by beating Bradley. Despite shooting a horrendous 26.9 percent from the field and posting their season low in points, the Tigers were able to edge out the Braves in the final minutes for the 52-46 win.

The hard-fought victory meant much more than another tally in the win column for the Tigers. The win marked many milestones for both the team and its players.

First, the win puts them at 5-2 overall, their best start to a season in three years. Also, their 18 of 67 shooting is the lowest field goal percentage in a winning effort in recent memory, according coach Cindy Stein.

Even more impressive were the achievements made by the players in Tuesday’s win.

Senior forward Jessra Johnson joined an elite group of Missouri women’s basketball players when she scored her 1,000th career point to start the second half. Her team-high 17 points made her the 27th player in Missouri history to reach this milestone.

Other Tigers with notable performances were junior guard RaeShara Brown who nabbed a career-high five steals in the defensive battle. Junior forward Shakara Jones also had her second game in a row of double-digit rebounds.

The girls will look to build on their strong start as they return to Mizzou Arena for a six-game home stand, starting with Texas-Pan American on Thursday.
