Missouri women's basketball falls to Big 12's basement

The Missouri women’s basketball team has hit a tough slide, losing its past five games and falling into last place in the Big 12.

Last weekend, the team struggled during the first half and ultimately suffered a blowout loss to No. 19 Iowa State, 65-39. In that game, coach Cindy Stein said she felt the team was flat in the first half and were never able to put together a good rhythm even into the second half. Several players stated they hoped, like in many previous cases, the team would be able to bounce back and have a better game.

Although the Tigers played better, they still lost a close match, 37-33, at Kansas State on Wednesday.

It appears at this time in the season, the only thing keeping the Tigers afloat is that no matter what their record ends up being, they will still be able to participate in the Big 12 Tournament in March. It is odd that the Tigers have been unable to claim a victory in five games despite earlier successes in the season, especially considering they were able to contain the Big 12’s arguably best player, Baylor’s freshman center Brittney Griner, and upset the Bears at Mizzou Arena.

Though they have faced several of the conference’s elite players recently, the Tigers do not seem to have a way to stop them. The team has appeared listless and overwhelmed by their opponents during the games. With the end of the regular season drawing to a close, all Missouri can do is play harder in their remaining games and find some form of motivation as the Big 12 Tournament draws near.
