Shire ties Big 12 record
Tigers’ senior Sarah Shire is on the verge of making Big 12 history.
For her career-high performance of 39.625 in the all-around last Friday against then-No. 2 Oklahoma, the Big 12 granted Shire her 11th career Big 12 Gymnast of the Week honor, which ties her with Nebraska’s Emily Parson’s mark.
With four meets remaining in the regular season, Shire has ample opportunity to break Parson’s all-time record.
Despite Shire’s dominant performance last week, Oklahoma (9-0) still bested Missouri (7-2), handing the Tigers their first home loss of the season. Two early and costly errors on uneven bars prevented the Tigers from hanging with the Sooner juggernaut.
The final score was 197.050-195.500.
Up ahead for No. 19 Missouri is a string of non-conference meets to finish out the regular season. First up on the itinerary are the Illinois State Redbirds (5-3), who will be at the Hearnes Center February 26.
Illinois State finished second in a tri-meet last week, beating out Midwest Independent rival Texas Women’s, but falling to Ball State.
The Redbirds earned the three tops scorers on balance beam during the tri-meet with sophomore Melissa Mann (9.750), senior Andrea Orris (9.725) and junior Hannah Deutsch (9.650).
Junior Erica Schick also took second place in the all-around, posting a total score 38.550.
The Redbirds season team high score stands at 194.150 in a home win against Ball State on Feb. 5.
