Tigers coast to win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville
The Missouri baseball team moved to 16-11 on Tuesday night with a non-conference victory over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The Tigers scored multiple runs in four different innings en route to the 14-3 win.
The visitors struck first with a homer from senior right fielder Dustin Brooks in the second. But Missouri quickly answered, putting three runs on the board to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Tiger junior right fielder Jonah Schmidt joined the party in the third, posting a two-run blast that sparked a four-run inning for the Tigers. Missouri would go on to double those seven runs in the next three innings.
The home team continued to coast offensively. Though all but one of the starters recorded a hit, the most notable Tiger at the plate was redshirt freshman Andreas Plackis. Batting in the four spot, the designated hitter notched five RBIs, capped off by a three-run bomb in the sixth.
Junior lefthander Jeff Scardino got the start and remained on the mound for seven innings to earn the win. He let up three earned runs and struck out three in 72 pitches. Junior righty Kevin Mahler then pitched two scoreless innings for the save.
Coach Tim Jamieson was happy with his starter’s work.
“No walks by him and by the entire staff so it was a good performance,” Jamieson said. “And on a night like to tonight when fly balls will go out.”
Jamieson was planning ahead in leaving Scardino in for so long, making sure to save the rest of his staff for tomorrow’s game.
“When you play two games back to back, you need somebody in the first one to give you some innings,” Jamieson said. “It’ll make it easier for us.”
Next up for the Tigers is Illinois on Wednesday. The rivalry game will be played at Busch Stadium in St. Louis at 7 p.m.
