Cantwell wins second consecutive U.S. shotput title

Former Missouri track and field star Christian Cantwell won his second consecutive U.S. shot-put title Sunday with a throw of 71 feet, ½ inch at Drake Stadium in Iowa.

Cantwell entered as the top seed in a very competitive group, which included the top three throwers in the world. The top seed was given because of his world-leading throw of 73 feet 4 inches.

Despite the competition, Cantwell was the only participant to surpass 70 feet, with Reese Hoffa finishing a distant second with a throw of 69 feet 11.75 inches. Cantwell also defeated Hoffa earlier this season at the Drake Relays.

Cantwell’s effort was his third best at the USATF Outdoor Championships. He has collected six USATF titles, the most by any Missouri track & field athlete in the program’s history. With his most recent win, Cantwell has doubled former shot-put star Bill Bangert, who won three titles from 1945 through 1946.

Cantwell will look to continue his success as he throws on Saturday at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon.
