Postgame Points: No. 20 Kansas State 24, Missouri 17
Quick hits after Missouri's loss to Kansas State this afternoon:
Anemic offense: Missouri piled up 523 yards of offense at Oklahoma, but could barely muster up more than 200 at Kansas State. Quarterback James Franklin showed some growing pains, going 19-of-35 for 214 yards and no touchdowns. He also began the game with an interception and came close to throwing at least two more. He looked solid late in the game, though.
Not enough Josey: Henry Josey is the Big 12's leading rusher, but he didn't touch the ball until the beginning of the 2nd quarter. He finished with respectable numbers, but you have to wonder how much more effective the offense could've been if Missouri hadn't relied so heavily on the struggling passing game early. By halftime, the Tigers faced a deficit and couldn't afford to lean on the rush.
Mistakes kill: The turning point in the game came in the middle of the 3rd quarter, with Kansas State up 10-3. Missouri forced KSU to punt, but Darvin Ruise was called for roughing the kicker when he barreled into punter Ryan Doerr. It was as blatant as it gets, and it cost Missouri. KSU quarterback Collin Klein drove his team down the field in seven plays for the deciding score. Missouri was penalized seven times for 49 yards during the game.
Ineffective in the clutch: Missouri came into the contest dead-last in the conference in third down conversions, and they will likely enter next week at the bottom again after going 4-of-13 Saturday.
Ressel in a funk: Missouri kicker Grant Ressel went 1-for-3, missing field goals from 37 and 43 yards out. Ressel had missed only three before 2011, but he's missed six this season alone.
Egnew emerges: A preseason All-American, tight end Michael Egnew had been largely nonexistent in the Missouri offense up until Saturday. Egnew had eight catches through the first four games, but had eight grabs for 73 yards against Kansas State. It seemed like Missouri offensive coordinator made a concerted effort to get him involved, and it worked.
