Missouri softball drops important series opener against Texas
A record-breaking crowd saw the demise of the nation’s best win streak Wednesday, as the No. 8 Missouri softball team lost to No. 3 Texas by a score of 2-0.
The loss snapped a 35-game win streak at home for the Tigers, and came with a University Field record 2,404 fans in attendance. With the loss to the conference leaders, the Tigers lost any chance at sole possession of the Big 12 crown. Missouri will try and salvage the split and a shot at a share of the conference title at noon tomorrow.
As expected, the matchup between the two Big 12 powerhouses turned into a pitcher’s duel. Sophomore ace Chelsea Thomas (24-5) took the circle for Missouri, striking out seven and allowing only four hits over seven innings of work. However, two of those hits left the yard, putting the onus on Missouri to score.
But Longhorn sophomore Blaire Luna was nearly unhittable, taking a no-hitter into the fourth inning. She struck out six and allowed just two hits and a walk in seven innings. Nicole Hudson was the only Tiger able to get a hit, one of two Missouri batters to even reach base.
If Missouri wins tomorrow afternoon, a couple of scenarios have to happen for them to earn a share of the Big 12 title with Texas. With a series split and a UT loss to Baylor next Sunday, Missouri must beat Oklahoma State on Wednesday and sweep Iowa State next weekend. Thomas is expected to get the start again tomorrow.
