Postgame Points: Arizona State 37, No. 21 Missouri 30 (OT)
Arizona State pulled off the upset of No. 21 Missouri, 37-30 in overtime on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.
– Comeback Call: A big win for the Sun Devils was in real jeopardy late after Tigers sophomore quarterback James Franklin led a two-touchdown, fourth quarter comeback in his first career road start. Down 30-14, Missouri recovered a fumble on a punt return at the Arizona State 34. Franklin hit wide receiver LaDamien Washington for a 27-yard touchdown to pull the Tigers within one score. A defensive stop later, Franklin drove the Tigers down again and hit tight end Michael Egnew for a four-yard score to tie the game. The Tigers had a chance to win it in regulation, but Grant Ressel's second missed field goal of the night sent the game to overtime.
– The Final Difference: Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler hit running back Jamal Miles on a swing pass for an 11-yard touchdown to take a 37-30 lead in overtime. On Missouri's possession, the Tigers went four-and-out, sealing their fate.
– A Long Time Coming: Arizona State notched its first victory over a ranked opponent since 2007. Missouri suffered its first nonconference regular season loss since 2005.
– The MVP: Missouri had no answer for Arizona State wide receiver Aaron Pflugrad, who notched eight receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns to lead a Sun Devil passing attack that netted 353 yards and four scores on the night.
– Offense, Offense, Offense: In traditional style for these two programs, the opponents engaged in a game-long shootout. Between the two were 67 points and 993 yards of total offense.
– Quarterback Duel: The game saw two gunslingers make names for themselves. Arizona State's Osweiler led a steady charge, going 24-of-32 for 353 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran five times for 34 yards and a score. On the other side, Missouri's James Franklin had his coming out party, going 26-of-42 for 319 yards and two touchdowns through the air, complemented by 27 carries for 84 yards and a score on the ground. In full, the two quarterbacks combined for 791 total yards and seven scores.
– Golden Opportunity: Missouri wide receiver Marcus Lucas caught attention last week with a touchdown in his first start in place of the injured Jerrell Jackson. This week, Lucas provided a deep threat for the Tigers, leading all Missouri receivers with 84 yards on four catches (a 21.8 yards per catch average).
– Penaltyfest: The penalties that characterized the end of the first half didn't disappear in the second. Missouri finished the game flagged 11 times for 114 yards and Arizona State was penalized 12 times for 110 yards.
