Tigers lose Big 12 opener to Texas Tech
Missouri has kicked off the conference portion of their schedule inauspiciously, as they dropped their Big 12 opener 1-0 to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
An early goal would prove to be all that TT needed for victory Friday night in Lubbock, Texas, as last year’s Big 12 rookie of the year Jessica Fuston’s tally in the third minute proved decisive.
The Tigers clamped down defensively after the earl mishap, but the offense just could not bail them out on this occasion.
Taiwo Adeshigbin, Alyssa Diggs and Abi Raymer all had quality scoring chances turned away by Red Raider goalkeeper Victoria Esson.
In the opposite net, redshirt freshmen McKenzie Sauerwein’s three saves in the second half kept the Tigers within one, but when sophomore Domonique Richardson’s shot in the 86th minute sailed just over the crossbar, the writing was on the wall for MU.
The defeat drops the Tigers to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Red Raiders improved to 6-3-1 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play.
Texas Tech appeared to be the easier of two matchups this weekend for the Tigers, who now head to Stillwater, Oklahoma for a Sunday matinee against Oklahoma State.
The Cowgirls are ranked 2nd nationally and enter Sunday’s match undefeated at 12-0, coming on the heels of a 5-1 victory over Kansas Friday night.
MU and OSU will kickoff Sunday at 1 p.m.
