The Big 12 Conference league office named MU sophomore Alan Waters the Big 12 wrestler of the week Tuesday for the second time this season.

Waters also received the honor on Dec. 12, and the Big 12 honored Missouri junior Brent Haynes last week. This season marks the first since the 2006-2007 season that the Tigers have won Wrestler of the Week on three separate occasions.

MU reached the championship of the Virginia Duals this past weekend, with Waters finishing with a perfect 3-0 record. He recorded victories over No. 19 Trent Sprinkle of North Dakota State, Edinboro’s Kory Mines and No. 4 Nic Bedelyon of Kent State for the second time this season.

Bedelyon took Waters to overtime before the MU sophomore scored a decisive takedown in sudden victory. The victory was not enough to lift Waters and MU to a dual win over Kent State.

Waters improved to 17-1 on the season, including 8-0 in dual meets. The 125-pound grappler is 6-1 on the year against top 20 competition. He has also won 12 of 17 matches with bonus points.

The Tigers and Waters will have the week off before heading to Edwardsville, Ill. on Jan. 29 for a quad meet against Eastern Michigan, SIU-Edwardsville and Truman State. The action will get underway at 1 p.m.
