Freshman chosen for annual Maneater scholarship
Assistant News Editor Allison Prang was named the fourth recipient of The Maneater’s annual scholarship for its staff members last week. An alumni steering committee selected Prang for the $500 scholarship based on her work as a political beat writer and for her passion for the newspaper.
"As an assistant news editor, state and college political beat writer and page designer, Allison exemplifies the tremendous hard work and dedication many Maneaters put into Mizzou's independent student newspaper,” said former Maneater managing editor Derek Kravitz, now a reporter with the Associated Press. “She lives in the newsroom, editing stories, hosting political panels on election night and writing the enterprising stories that show how journalism can serve its readers and communities. Her drive and passion for storytelling is evident and her work at The Maneater only proves how indispensable the newspaper is to the campus, the larger university community and the city of Columbia."
Prang has been a Maneater staff member since June 2010, months before her first classes at MU, and was hired as an assistant news editor in December 2010. Through stories about the Westboro Baptist Church, a 1920s lynching and Gov. Jay Nixon’s State of the State address, Prang has covered hot topics and big issues at the state and local levels.
“I have poured my blood, sweat and sometimes even tears into my job, because to me, it made my freshman year experience at Mizzou the best it could have been,” Prang said in her scholarship essay. “I get the privilege of being surrounded by students who are in love with journalism and the news as much as I am, every single day.”
The alumni steering committee hopes the scholarship program, which was created in 2008 from money donated by alumni to the newspaper at its 50th anniversary celebration in 2005, will create an added incentive for staff members to work long hours at The Maneater.
“The student journalists at The Maneater spend all their waking hours here, putting out the best product they can — usually for little or no money,” said Becky Diehl, the newspaper’s adviser. “This scholarship program will help foster a new breed of Maneaters who will carry on the long tradition of this great, award-winning newspaper.”
The Maneater was founded on Feb. 18, 1955, by Joel Gold, then a sociology major. Gold took the former student newspaper, The Missouri Student, which was run by the Delta Upsilon fraternity, and renamed it The Maneater to reflect a more aggressive news style. Since then, the newspaper has won numerous national and regional journalism awards, and Maneater alumni have gone on to work in many of the nation’s top newsrooms, including The Associated Press, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, USA Today and The Washington Post.
The editorial and advertising staffs at The Maneater are comprised entirely of students with the exception of an adviser and receptionist. The Maneater is the official student newspaper of the University of Missouri and is a student organization that operates independently from the student government, the School of Journalism and any other campus entity.
Alumni and friends of The Maneater interested in donating to the scholarship fund should contact Diehl at 573-882-6288.
