A look at our endorsements
Last Friday, we published our elections voter's guide (the electronic version of which is available here), and along with it our endorsements in local, state and national races as well as some ballot issues we believed could affect MU students. This is a look at how we reached our decisions.
Like the editorials that appear in every issue of The Maneater, our endorsements are based on our editorial policy, written by founding Editor-in-Chief Joe Gold:
The Maneater recognizes no vested interest, no political party, no group, no matter how powerful. As a publication of the student body of the University of Missouri, the vital consideration must ever be to the entire student body of this university.
The editorials will be aimed toward what is right and against what is wrong. They will be the results of a staff fitting themselves to the personality implied and evident in the vital name of The Maneater.
We based our endorsements on what we believe would benefit (or, in some cases, harm) students the most. In some races we were able to reach a consensus quickly, while in others we had trouble reaching a consensus at all. In fact, some members of the editorial board noted that their votes in the endorsement meeting were different than the votes they would cast on Tuesday.
We've written our endorsements to reflect what we considered in our discussion of the candidates so you can decide whether our values are similar to yours. But our endorsements and any others should be taken with a grain of salt. If you've taken the time to learn about the issues and the candidates (and The Maneater's Elections Guide is a good place to start), you don't need us to tell you how to vote.
