Firefighters begin overhaul at 5119 Alpine Ridge Drive after a duplex caught fire Wednesday evening when three MU sophomores attempted to fry crab rangoon in their kitchen. The fire caused severe damage to the building, ruining the entire main floor and leaving the kitchen beyond repair.

A fire destroyed the kitchen at 5119 Alpine Ridge Drive Wednesday night with temperatures hot enough to melt the door off of the refrigerator. The fire started when a pot of cooking oil on the stove caught fire, quickly igniting the microwave above it and the surrounding cabinets.

Beverly Thomas, mother of former Columbia Police Department Officer Molly Thomas-Bowden, places flowers at her daughter's grave Tuesday. A procession of about 30 emergency vehicles followed a brief ceremony on Nifong Blvd., where Thomas-Bowden was wounded during a traffic stop. Thomas-Bowden passed away Feb. 10, 2005 as a result of her injuries. "It's awesome what this city and the people here have done for our daughter, for our family and for the department. There are people who don't have something like this to remember those they lost, and I grieve for them," David Thomas said.
