ST. LOUIS — Parts of the federal government's St. Louis offices were shut down Tuesday in lieu of the terrorist attacks on the East Coast.

Federal buildings around the city sent employees home and shut the doors Tuesday immediately following the incident. U.S. Marshals surrounded the Eagleton Federal Building in downtown St. Louis Tuesday.

National monuments around the nation, including the Gateway Arch, were closed to visitors. Passersby couldn't get within several hundred feet of the Gateway to the West.

In fact, guards at the Arch reported they had heard about a possible bomb threat at a federal building in St. Louis which heightened security.

Several businesses around town closed in respect of the people who lost their lives in the explosions Tuesday.
