Students looking to add a healthy variety to their diets should stop by East Campus any Wednesday in October to learn the art of vegan cooking.

Members of Students for Ethical Animal Treatment will host vegan cooking lessons every Wednesday starting this week.

Each lesson also will have guest lecturers who will speak on topics such as organic farming and freeganism, which involves only eating non-vegan food if it's free, said Kat Erdel, one of the four workshop hosts.

"People are scared of veganism because they don't know what they can eat," she said. "We want to dispel the myth. Nothing has to die, and you're not hurting your health. It's good food, too.

"Sometimes I don't even feel like a vegan. For example, the other night I had meatballs, only they were made with TVPs instead of meat."

TVP stands for texturized vegetable proteins, which come from soy.

Erdel and her roommates will teach a variety of dishes over the weeks, including Italian, Eastern, barbecue, "down-home" meals and desserts.

The classes cost $5 per lesson, which will cover the costs for food. Classes last from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be held at 1415 Rosemary Lane.

"The lessons aren't just for vegans or vegetarians," Erdel said. "They're for anyone who wants to cook."
