People attempting to access the Internet on campus Sunday morning were probably pleasantly surprised ' it was working.

Information and Access Technology Services sent an e-mail Sunday morning warning students campus Internet access might be down for extended periods of time Sunday from midnight until noon.

However, Director of Telecommunications Beth Chancellor said the Internet was down for a considerably shorter period of time.

"Actually it was down for only about five to ten minutes," Chancellor said.

MOREnet, MU's Internet service provider, performed maintenance on one of the routers that handles MU's Internet connection.

IAT services officials said they have the option of using the Sunday morning maintenance windows, but Chancellor said they try to limit their use.

During these maintenance windows, any network system could be affected, such as Blackboard, WebCT and Webmail.

"We try to limit our use of the maintenance windows to downtimes like Thanksgiving and Christmas break," Chancellor said. "We never know when a problem might crop up, though."
