As the deadline to file for the Missouri Students Association presidential election slipped by Monday afternoon, members of the Board of Elections Commissioners prepared for the largest presidential election in MSA history.

BEC chairwoman Tara Brandenburger said all seven slates who announced plans to run turned in their petitions before the 5 p.m. deadline.

Paul Pattison/Abby Eden was the first slate to turn in forms, more than two weeks ago. The final two slates, Brandon Burkhart/Beth Asay and Johnathan Stone/Nescelle Caberto, turned in their forms Monday.

The slates will be certified at the BEC's first meeting on Sunday. The BEC has to check petitions and make sure no one has duplicate signatures, Brandenburger said.

"Five of the seven slates already have been entered," she said. "It's just a matter of entering the last 1,000 names and comparing the lists to make sure there are no duplicates. If a slate falls below 500, they will have 48 hours to obtain the required signatures."

Brandenburger said most slates turned in more than 500 signatures, so she doesn't anticipate a problem.

Other slates that turned in forms to run for MSA's highest office are Andy Fluhart/Jackie Cook-Eberle, Ben Coen/Craig Kleine, Matt Sokoloff/Greg Chase and Tony Luetkemeyer/Cheryl Tomes.

The MSA presidential election will take place Nov. 8 to 10.

Brandenburger said she was surprised by the number of slates, but she wasn't surprised they all followed through on their announcements to run.

"Most had already begun creating Web sites and speaking to groups," she said. "This is the largest number of slates we can find on record."
