The Missouri Students Association Department of Student Activities announced earlier this week the two headlining bands that will perform at the Big Free Music Festival on May 7.

Rapper Common and the rap group Jurassic 5 will perform at the festival.

"I'm very pleased with the bands we've gotten," DSA Director David Crawford said. "We had a difficult time deciding what groups could please the most students. We felt these bands had a universal appeal and have consistently good acts."

Crawford said the festival probably will appeal to many students because of the diversity of the acts.

"The show ranges from country bands to hip-hop groups to alternative-rock bands," he said. "Everybody should like at least one of the bands."

The other six bands performing during the festival are M.S.O., Tall Watts, Mahjongg, Mission of Burma, Mootz Moody and the Prairie Hawk Band and Hazard to Ya Booty.

The festival also will feature 14 activities including inflatables, mechanical bulls and a jousting booth, Crawford said.

"We wanted to have some additional entertainment for the festival atmosphere," he said. "We considered carnival rides and other activities, but we chose these because they are popular, fun and not very expensive. A lot of people can use them in a short amount of time, so they won't be monopolized by a few people all day."

STRIPES will sponsor a dunk tank, and MSA Senate members will supervise the jousting booth, junior Amy Engelkenjohn said.

"I'm looking forward to the jousting booth," she said. "They're lots of fun. People get to hit each other with large foam-covered sticks."

Big Free take place in the parking lot outside the Hearnes Center. Doors to the event will open at 4:30 p.m., and the first bands will take the stage at 5, Crawford said.

"I'm looking most forward to seeing everybody out there together," he said. "Seeing it all run smoothly and having people walk away happy will be great."
