House proposes restoring funding to library system

The House Budget Committee will begin discussing Monday its recommendations for the state budget, which include restoring funding for an online library information system.
The MOBIUS Common Platform system is a consortium of 60 colleges and universities and two public libraries in Missouri, which allows students to find materials in other state libraries.
Gov. Matt Blunt recently announced plans to cut state funding for the program by $272,305, which would force MU Libraries to spend an additional $119,691 to keep the system running. A higher education bill restores partial funding to the program.
UM system spokesman Joe Moore said the governor and the Missouri House have recommended higher education operating budgets for the upcoming year that are essentially flat compared to last year.
"I do expect that university officials will continue to work with state leaders in the coming weeks to ensure that any university services that it provides to the state of Missouri are as adequately funded as possible," Moore said.
