CPD sergeant resigns over DWI controversy

Published Jan. 27, 2006

Sgt. Gerald "Jerry" Greene, a Columbia police officer arrested on Jan. 16 on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, resigned Thursday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Greene in Audrain County and also charged him with speeding.

Columbia Police Chief Randy Boehm said he was unable to comment about whether he would have fired Greene if the officer did not resign.

"Resignation was an opportunity that I did offer to him," Boehm said.

Greene worked in the east district of Columbia, which includes most of the East Campus residential area near MU.

Greene supervised the department's narcotics unit and also was part of the tactical team.

Greene is the second Columbia police officer to leave the department in less than a month.

On Dec. 31, officer Todd Smith was fired after the department discovered he had used police department equipment to stalk his ex-girlfriend.
